Bosso, Lorenz certified with Added Qualifications

MUSC College of Pharmacy professor, John Bosso, Pharm.D., and assistant professor Kurt Lorenz, Pharm.D., have been certified in Pharmacotherapy with Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS).

The designation is pharmacy’s newest credential for the recognition of pharmacist specialists in advanced areas of practice. 

Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties literature explains, “Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy demonstrates an advanced level of education and training, as well as mastery of the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this area of specialized practice necessary to meet the public’s demand for expert pharmaceutical care.”

Pharmacotherapy specialists serve with physicians and other patient care team members advising in the judicious use of pharmaceutical drugs in therapeutic decision-making. As specialists in infectious diseases, Bosso and Lorenz recommend appropriate anti-microbial agents to treat infectious disease cases and participate in the evaluation of patient response.

Board examinations are required for certification in pharmacotherapy. The Added Qualifications credential follows a portfolio review of an applicant’s curriculum vitae, research experience, clinical experience and specialized training.

The board cites “the rapid, dramatic advancement in drug therapy in recent decades has created a clear need for pharmacy practitioners who specialize in specific kinds of treatment and aspects of care. Specialty certification is a responsible, progressive initiative from the profession to try to ensure the best possible patient care.”

Only 32 people in the United States are credentialed with the Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases.
