SGA president welcomes students to MUSC

by Thomas Phillips, President
MUSC Student Government Association
On behalf of your Student Government Association, it is my pleasure to welcome you to MUSC. As you begin earnest training in your health care field, I am confident that you will be as warmly greeted as I was and that you will just as rapidly feel yourself part of the family.

The Student Government Association strives to help students maximize their experience here at MUSC, making it the best time of their lives. A large part of what we do focuses on expanding opportunities for social interaction and cultural enlightenment outside of the academic rigors of the classroom. Staple events such as Welcome Back parties and Last Day of Classes parties, the St. Luke’s Concert Series, wholesome family-oriented events, informative lunchtime affairs, and our spring semester blow-out Alhambra are just a few of the avenues through which the Student Government Association aids students with social diversions and opportunities for personal growth. You can easily find out about these and many more events through your SGA representatives, the Student Programs office, your e-mail, Semester Highlights, Student Lifelines and The Catalyst.

Realizing that special situations often arise and that imperfections do exist, SGA also devotes a large part of our efforts toward voicing the suggestions and complaints of the students to the administration. You’ll find that the administration is devoted to the students and excited to listen to our suggestions. Each college has its own set of SGA representatives who serve both to keep you informed and to act as your voice to both SGA and the administration. If you are interested in being a representative, elections for new students take place shortly after classes begin.

I challenge you to become as engaged as possible wherever your interest leads. Every college has its own leadership and interest groups, there are hundreds of options in the community, and MUSC abounds with volunteer opportunities. The MUSC Gives Back office is always tracking such volunteer opportunities and needing students to do our part to help.

Again, welcome to your new home at MUSC. If at any point the SGA or I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your SGA representative, myself, or drop by the Student Programs Office in the Harper Student Center. We are always eager to help you realize how wonderful of a place MUSC is!
