Abercrombie appointed S.C. AHEC executive director

Stoney A. Abercrombie, M.D., clinical professor of Family Medicine, was appointed the executive director of the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (S.C. AHEC) on July 19.

A native of Six Mile, S.C., he is a graduate of Clemson University, MUSC, and the Family Medicine Residency Program of the Greenville Hospital System. Abercrombie has also completed a post-graduate faculty development at Duke Medical Center.

After two years as a flight surgeon in the United States Army and eight years in private practice in Seneca, S.C., Abercrombie entered academia with the Family Medicine Residency of Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. He served for nine years as the program director and director of Medical Education in Greenwood. In 1999, Abercrombie became the associate director at the Anderson Area Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program with the task of starting a rural training site in Oconee County. He became the interim executive director of S.C. AHEC in January.

Presently, he is the South Carolina Family Physician of the Year and one of the top 10 finalists for the American Family Physician of the Year. Besides organized medicine, Aber-crombie is actively involved in medical missions.

“I am deeply honored to serve this wonderful organization,” Aber-crombie said. “The solid foundation laid by my predecessors will allow me the opportunity to lead our Consortium of teaching hospitals and educational centers into exciting changes in this new era. We will continue to focus on improved health care delivery to the citizens of South Carolina.”
