Pharmacy faculty, alums net SCPhA awards

Two pharmacy faculty members and an MUSC alumna were tapped for awards from their peers during the annual meeting of the South Carolina Pharmacy Association (SCPhA) which was held in Savannah, Ga., July 13 to 16.

Arnold W. Karig, Ph.D., associate dean, College of Pharmacy; Peter F. Edwards, R.Ph., director of professional affairs and 1993 College of Pharmacy alumna Caroline Sullivan, R.Ph., were recognized and honored with various professional awards.
 “These awards are a tribute to the involvement of faculty and staff within their pharmacy practice, profession and community,” said Karig. 

Karig, whose career spans 29 years with the College of Pharmacy, received the group's Bowl of Hygeia Award, an honor that recognizes a licensed pharmacist who exhibits exemplary skills of community service and past participation within the organization. Karig is an active leader in the Isle of Palms community. He has worked with the Isle Of Palms (IOP) United Methodist Church, Board of Health, IOP Planning and Zoning Committee, the Boy Scouts and has assisted in coaching local sports. On campus, he serves as faculty advisor for the Academy of Students of Pharmacy, a student branch of the American Pharmaceutical Association.

The 2000 Pharmacist of the Year Award was presented to Edwards, another member of the College of Pharmacy's faculty and an alumnus. Edwards has previously served as past chairman of the SCPhA Board of Directors and has previously worked with the group's legislative preceptors successfully passing the state's Pharmacy Practice Act in 1998.

Charleston-native Caroline Sullivan was named as Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year, an award sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual Companies. Sullivan works as chief pharmacist at MUSC's Department of Family Medicine enhancing patient care as an educator and combining research interests in cardiovascular disease working with the Anti-hypertensive and Lipid-Lowering to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT). She follows fellow Pharmacy alumna Joannie Richardson who was presented the award in 1998.

In other business at the meeting, Edwards was elected as treasurer for the organization while Sullivan was named vice chair to the SCAPhA House of Delegates. Senior MUSC pharmacy student Stacy Balducci received the group's Student Leadership Award.
