An array of workshops and seminars to address individual professional development skills as well as support the accomplishment of departmental organizational goals is offered. Punctuation Marks: Where, When and Why?

This workshop will refresh the participant’s memory—or teach for the first time—the where, when, and why of punctuation marks. Punctuation is an important feature of written communication. This workshop will help create an understanding of how punctuating correctly can enhance one’s professional image through one’s written work. Fee: $50 per participant

Word 97 Basics

Sept. 26, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., room 102C, Harborview Office Tower (HOT)
 This workshop builds on the basics of keying, saving, and printing documents. Participants will become familiar with the various components of Word 97 screens and the creation, printing, and saving of simple no-frills documents. Participants will also learn to reopen documents in order to use proofreading, editing and formatting tools. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 Basics, and Windows 95 File Management. Fee: $50 per participant

Access 97 Basics

Sept. 27, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., room 102C HOT
This workshop introduces participants to Access and many of the unique features that make Access the easiest to use of all database managers. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 Basics, and Windows 95 File Management. Objectives include: Start and close Access; create and modify tables; create, use and save queries; create spreadsheets for entering data and looking at records; create databases; and copy information from one database to another database. Also included is a basic introduction to database theory. Fee: $50 per participant

The A B C’s of Effective Supervision 
(Series I)

Sept. 27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., room 103 HOT
Successful supervision requires competence, confidence and continuous learning. In the first of a three part seminar series, participants will learn: three basic skills all supervisors should master; individual leadership style and its strengths and weaknesses; strategies for supervising former peers; methods of communicating with individuals and groups; focusing on quality and improvement; holding employees accountable; increasing motivation and morale; and other critical leadership skills and strategies. Fee: $75 per participant

Excel 97 Basics

 This workshop will familiarize participants with Excel techniques for quickly enabling users to create Excel spreadsheets. These techniques include: entering data, creating formulas, formatting worksheets, and printing and saving data on diskettes. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 Basics, and Windows 95 File Management.

This workshop teaches participants to create a sample table, format the table, and insert graphic images and text boxes in documents. In addition, participants will create a form letter, merge addresses and other variable text, and prepare envelopes and labels for addresses. Employment Law for Managers and Supervisors

 This seminar will be offered in two consecutive half-day sessions. Roberta Smith Tracy, Esq., retired district judge and director of Equal Opportunity at The Citadel, will be the principal instructor and seminar leader.  Federal statutes define an employer as “any person who acts directly or indirectly, in the interest of an employer to any of the employees of such an employer.” This means that as a supervisor, manager, department head, etc., you can be held personally liable for any employment actions you take that violate federal employment laws. Participants will learn what they need to know to protect themselves from personal liability. Fee: $75 per participant

Excel 97 Intermediate

This workshop will introduce the concept of Excel charting. Participants will be shown how to enhance data display and interpretation; discuss the different types of charts created in Excel; how to use the Chart Wizard; and use Excel charts in other applications. Coaching For Improved Performance 
(Series II)

 In the second of a three part seminar series, participants will learn when to coach, when to motivate and when to discipline. Participants will also learn to separate performance and discipline problems; how to analyze performance problems; and, the use of constructive criticism to make repairs not enemies. Transition From Specialist To Supervisor

This seminar is designed for employees who are preparing to step into a supervisory role, or who are currently filling supervisory positions, and desire to learn techniques to avoid the five most common reasons supervisors fail. This is an active participation training course and includes lecture, interaction, role-play, and training games in order to focus on the topics of delegation, motivation and communication. Participants will be shown how to formulate a supervisor action plan. Fee: $75 per participant—full-day workshop

 This workshop takes participants from Access 97 Basics to normalizing a table; designing and developing table relationships; editing and validating data in tables; working with calculations in a query; creating forms that contain sub-forms; and customizing reports created by the Report Wizard. Writing at Work

 This workshop focuses on an analysis of writing in the workplace. Beginning with writing strong, forceful sentences and punctuating them correctly, the workshop advances to addressing structure in standard letters, memorandums and minutes. Fee: $50 per participant

Team Approach to Superior Service Training

The Power of Teamwork (Series III)

Today’s successful supervisor understands the many benefits of team building and development, and the high quality of performance and product team building can produce. In the last of this three part seminar series, participants will learn to fine tune team development skills; develop team and individual goals; and reduce bickering and conflict within the team.  Participants will also learn how to encourage problem solving at all levels; focus on the customer; lead effective team meetings; introduce team building activities; and recognize and reward team progress. Listening: A Powerful Skill for Successful Communication

Ethics: Right vs. Right

Part I of this half-day seminar is the instructional portion that will relay horrific statistics about today’s moral decline and place them into a normal setting of today’s health care environment. This sets the stage to reinforce defined concepts of morals, values, ethics and ethical policies. Part II begins with an interactive approach where the instruction methodology is “learning through doing.” Participants will be divided into small work teams and be presented ethical dilemmas faced in the everyday workplace.
