Join the club (men need not apply)

by Leigh Fylstra
Public Relations
The Medical University Women’s Club (MUWC) encourages new members to join their fun and philanthropic group, which is composed of professional faculty, administrative officers or their spouses, and, as the name might suggest, is women only.

Members of the Medical University Women’s Club include: Laura Patrick, Donna Wilson, Terri DeVane, JoAnn Rampton, Barbara Warburton and Lynda Selby.

The non-profit organization exists to promote projects that provide fellowship and support for MUSC. All the money raised through the many projects, such as Ghostwalk, Poinsettia Sales, and “The Looking Glass,” returns to MUSC in many beneficial forms, often in scholarships.

Charleston Ghostwalk
You’re invited to join the original Charleston Ghostwalk.  Accompanying the Women’s Medical Auxiliary, the Women’s Club produces the genuine Charleston Ghostwalk on Oct. 13 and 14.  On this spooky walking tour of historic Charleston, actors tell stories of our very own Lowcountry ghouls.  Volunteers can guide tours, sell tickets and help dispense rejuvenating refreshments to the frightened masses.  To participate, contact Helena Uflacker at 881-1085

Poinsettia and Wreath Sale, Sept. 14 deadline
Speaking of holidays, is it ever really too early to think about Christmas? Not if you want beautiful, florist quality poinsettias to decorate your office for the holidays. The deadline for ordering from MUWC’s Poinsettia Sale is Sept. 14. The poinsettias conveniently arrive right before Thanksgiving, and by ordering more than five, they can even be personally delivered to your office door. Just think, you will probably buy poinsettias for your office later anyway, but if you order from MUWC now, you will spread Christmas cheer to recipients of scholarships to MUSC colleges. To order, call Donna Wilson at 849-0151 or visits its Web site at <http://www.musc.edu/catalyst/order.htm>.

HCC's Looking Glass Boutique
The newest project is “The Looking Glass” Boutique at the Hollings Cancer Center. Volunteers from the Women’s Club are needed to staff the pleasant, new shop. Working only two shifts a month, the volunteers will greet customers and do other small things, while a registered nurse fits those in need of wigs, prostheses, specialty clothing and accessories. Call Peggy Underwood for details at 557-7881.

Through these three main projects, MUWC raises the money for their donations and scholarships.  Last year, the women’s club awarded three deserving students of MUSC’s six colleges with a $2,000 scholarship each. In addition to the scholarships, they donated $500 to Pediatric Intensive Care for needed equipment and collected books for the Inpatient Library.

Besides all that giving and donating, the Women’s Club has some fun too. While promoting goodwill on campus, MUWC also helps newcomers make friends and feel like a part of the community.

Membership Coffee
As a member, you can join the fun this fall at the Membership Coffee, to be held at the home of Leah Greenberg, wife of MUSC President Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., Thursday, Sept. 14. You could try a new restaurant the first week of each month with the “Lunch Bunch.” Or why not broaden your mind at the book club on Wednesdays at noon? Maybe you want to play bridge on the third Friday of each month. You’re also welcome on day trips to places like Brookgreen Gardens, Frances Beidler Forest and Hilton Head Outlets. Other interest groups, meetings and the holiday party also help build strong friendships within the Medical University community.

At the Nov. 2 luncheon meeting, representatives from the “Center for Appearance,” from the 10th floor of Rutledge Tower, are speaking about their wide variety of services for men and women. Their services range from facials, laser hair removal, glycolic peels, microdermabrasion and waxing to such services as laser tattoo removal.

Even if you feel you cannot attend many functions, MUWC welcomes you to join anyway. Your dues will help support the projects, and the newsletter, “The Distaff,” will keep you informed.

For membership information, contact Terri DeVane, 884-2728.

And for all you men out there who can’t join the club, buy poinsettias.

“It seems these days at MUSC that we’re all being asked to do more with less. The members of MUWC are women who have always done more, working hard to support MUSC and its students. I have very much enjoyed getting to know the women that take time to work for the Medical University through MUWC. I hope you will want to lend your support—either through your membership dues that provide scholarships or through actually spending some of your precious time on our activities. I hope to see you at an event soon!” —Leah Greenberg
From a note written to prospective MUWC members.
