College of Nursing students volunteer for Project Go

Seventh grade girls at Rivers Middle School learned about goal setting, self esteem and healthier lifestyles recently from College of Nursing students, who volunteered to work with the Trident Urban League’s Project Go.

The 25 middle school girls who attended Feb. 28 and the 28 who attended March 22 heard guest speakers from The Citadel and the College of Charleston share stories about overcoming adversity, setting and meeting goals and learning about careers in cosmetology.

The students were encouraged to participate in question and answer sessions held in small groups and led by the nursing students who worked with them setting personal goals.

Volunteers, who worked under Dr. Marilyn King in her Community Nursing course, said that the students were receptive to the topics and believe that positive role models are essential for young girls.

The College of Nursing students presented their volunteer project last week in the college’s second floor lobby. They are: Mia Barron, Tracy Bentley, Jennifer Case, Amy Funderburk, Katreia Gleaton, Tia Grant, Kandee Parker, Heyward Simmons, and Kathleen Stovall.
