PBS special to feature MUSC professor

A PBS special entitled “Life’s Little Questions II” will feature Ron Turner, M.D., head of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. The program will air at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 on WITV Ch. 7 in Charleston.

The program is part of the Scientific American Frontiers series with Alan Alda. Alda and a PBS crew  was in Charleston in November 1999 to video Turner and his clinical trial team.

The section of the program featuring Turner asks why in a time of great technological advances can’t scientists cure the common cold. It discusses the standard answer that there are myriad viruses that cause cold-like symptoms, but goes into other issues in an interview with Turner.  Turner explains why it is so difficult to design clinical trials of so-called anti-cold medications —and why we should be skeptical of over-the-counter remedies.
