SGA president gives MUSC students update

by Thomas Phillips, President
MUSC Student Government Association

Happy New Year! On behalf of the SGA, I'd like to welcome everyone back for a new academic term! For new students, welcome to Charleston and the MUSC family! As I begin my annual struggle to stop writing “00” on my checks and make the switch to “01” (which usually takes hold sometime in November), I would like to take a moment to catch everyone up on what the SGA has been up to as well as what we’ve got on the docket for the coming months.

Last term was certainly a busy one, as evidenced by the fact that it slipped by so quickly. The 24-Hour Study Room saw heavy student utilization during its first semester in action. Many suggestions have been entered regarding the room, all of which have been pursued. The library staff is very open to these suggestions and several improvements are in the works. Also, the library is considering adding lockers for student use; a convenience we eagerly anticipate.

SGA will of course continue the Leadership MUSC 2000-2001 series started last term. In response to student suggestions, topics this term will cover interdisciplinary interaction and health care diversity issues. Come enrich yourselves as MUSC continues to keep students ahead of the ever-improving health care world.

The Harper Student Center lounge has a new addition thanks to Elizabeth Majeski's efforts. She helped pick up a surplus computer that provides another web and e-mail connection for MUSC students. In the coming months SGA will continue the pursuit of a female provider for Student Health Services as well as working on offering more streamlined student access to the Wellness Center. Student parking also continues to be a big issue, and we have devoted a great deal of time exploring various ideas for improvement. Let us know of any suggestions you might have!

The social calendar was also a full one this fall, highlighted by the Beach Bash, St. Luke's Concerts, Halloween Horror Cruise, Octoberfest Beer Tasting, and The Have Nots. The Spring has some big events in store as well. Go ahead and block off the afternoon of April 7 (the afternoon of the Cooper River Bridge Run) for ALHAMBRA! This year I’m looking for beautiful and warm April weather for an afternoon in the sun followed by Opening Day of my favorite baseball team, the Charleston Riverdogs (both are covered by your Alhambra admission ticket)! Hang onto your Student Lifelines and Semester Highlights to stay informed. Enjoy the Spring Term and I look forward to seeing everyone at our events!
