Responsible Conduct of Research course to begin Feb. 19

A course on the Responsible Conduct of Research is being offered to all postdoctoral fellows and faculty at MUSC. The course will be held in the Day Room of the Weight Management Center of the Institute of Psychiatry, South Building.

Two sections of the course will be held. Section A will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting Feb. 19. Section B will also start on Feb. 19, and meet from 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday evenings.  Each section will last for seven consecutive weeks.

The major format for the course will be informal discussions of case scenarios having to do scientific research ethics, though initially information about historical development of the Responsible Conduct of Research and developing an adequate response to an ethical dilemma will be offered. Other topics to be discussed include mentor - student - institution relationships, scientific record keeping, data ownership, intellectual property, authorship, plagiarism, peer review, confidentially, scientific misconduct, use of humans and animals in research, genetic technology, public money—private gain or for profit science, conflict of interest, and whistleblower rights. A number of faculty from MUSC participate in the course and help facilitate discussions.

There is no cost for the course. To register, or for more information, call William Boggan, Ph.D.,  at 792-5222 or e-mail bogganwo@musc.edu.
