Mobilize for National Primary Care Week at MUSC

National Primary Care Week 2001 entitled “Healthy People 2010: Mobilizing Interdisciplinary Teams” will be held Oct. 22-25 at MUSC. 

National Primary Care Week (NPCW) at MUSC is a student-led initiative coordinated by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), in conjunction with the MUSC Office of Primary Care and the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC). 

This event highlights primary care careers and the need for primary care, especially in communities with unmet needs. 

The following presentations are planned to commemorate NPCW at MUSC:

 Monday, Oct. 22, Noon to 1 p.m., Institute of Psychiatry Auditorium
“The Team Approach to Delivering Primary Care” This session will include a panel discussion by William Hueston, M.D., professor and chair; Todd Detar, D.O., medical director, Susan Barger, F.N.P.; and Louise Pecevich, P.A., Department of Family Medicine. 

Lunch is for seminar participants only and will be provided by the Office of the Provost.

Tuesday, Oct. 23, Noon to 1 p.m., Baruch Auditorium, 284 Calhoun Street 
In cooperation with the American Medical Student Association, NPCW will include a lecture entitled: “Disparities in Health and Health Care Delivery.” A presentation by Barbara Tilley, Ph.D., professor and chair and Dan Lackland, Ph.D., professor of the Department of Biometry and Epidemiology, will address health disparities in South Carolina as part of our culture and diversity in health care series.

Wednesday, Oct. 24, Noon to 1 p.m., Baruch Auditorium, 284 Calhoun Street 
“My Life as a Primary Care Doctor” Daniel Brake, M.D., South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians’ 2000-2001 Family Physician of the Year and past president of the South Carolina Medical Association with 30 years as a practicing physician, will reflect on his career.

Lunch is for seminar participants only and will be provided by S.C. AHEC.

Thursday, Oct. 25, Noon to 1 p.m., Institute of Psychiatry Auditorium
“Succeeding Financially in Today’s Primary Care Medical Practice” Ira Bedenbaugh, Financial manager for the Family Health Care Center in Clinton, SC, will present information about the trends presently underway in paying for health care services and how to succeed in a primary care practice.

Lunch is for seminar participants only and will be provided by the State Office of Rural Health.
