Officials discuss health services, outreach

Health services research and community outreach activities were the topics discussed Sunday, Oct. 28, during a visit to MUSC by Con-gresswoman Donna Christian-Christiansen.

Christian-Christiansen is  the first female physician in the history of the U.S. Congress and is the first woman to represent an offshore territory, and the first woman delegate from the U.S. Virgin Islands. As a member of numerous House committees and subcommittees and caucuses, including the Congressional Black Caucus’ Health Braintrust, which oversees and advocates minority health issues nationally and internationally, she was a rich source of insight into existing and emerging federal programs that promote health services research and community outreach activities at universities.

She was accompanied during her visit by her host, MUSC President Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., and several faculty and staff members, along with a student representative of the Presidential Scholars Program.

The group explored the need for funding to initiate and maintain MUSC outreach efforts that demonstrate success in reducing health disparities and the need for an MUSC infrastructure to help coordinate such efforts.

Christian-Christensen’s visit also afforded an opportunity for MUSC officials to offer input on emerging federal legislation regarding public health infrastructure and response to bioterrorism.
