Three outstanding students from the College of Dental Medicine have been presented scholarship awards for the 2001-2002 academic year from the profession’s most prestigious organizations.

Second-year student Cory Burgoyne was awarded the American Dental Association (ADA) Dental Student Scholarship while Nahal Badiian-Farahani received the ADA Minority Dental Student Scholarship in the amounts of $2,500 each. Fourth-year student Henry Bradford III was the recipient of the Pierre Fauchard Academy’s Dental Student Scholarship Award in the amount of $1,500.

“I am proud of these students for their accomplishments and credentials in earning these national-level scholarships,” said Tariq Javed, DMD, professor and associate dean for Academic and Student Affairs, College of Dental Medicine. “It's a positive reflection of our program and the talented faculty and staff who teach and train these students.”

Burgoyne's scholarship is part of the ADA Endowment Fund and ADA Health Foundation to assist dental students and allied dental health students. The award is open to second-year students in good academic standing who are attending an accredited dental school, are U.S. citizens and demonstrate a financial need.

Badiian-Farahani’s award is similar to the ADA student scholarship but is open to qualifying dental students of African American, Hispanic or Native American descent. Additional support for these scholarships are provided by other corporate sponsors including Colgate-Palmolive Co., Harry J. Bosworth Co., Eastman Kodak Co., Oral-B Laboratories and Proctor and Gamble Co.

Tennessee  native Burgoyne is from Chattanooga. She is a member of Delta Sigma Delta, secretary for the Dental Student Alumni Council, librarian for the ASDA, chapter historian for the American Association of Women Dentists and an MUSC Presidental Scholar.

“I'm honored that the ADA has chosen me to be recognized for this scholarship,” said Burgoyne. “It will be a tremendous help financially as I continue with my studies and academic goals.”

Badiian-Farahani lives in Charleston and graduated from the College of Charleston before attending MUSC. She is treasurer of the SNDA and a member of the ASDA and MUSC’s Baha’i Club.

Bradford is this year's recipient of the Pierre Fauchard Academy Scholarship. Each year the foundation supports the field of dental health through clinical research, faculty development, charitable projects in dentistry and scholarships.

A fourth-year dental student from Marietta, Ga., Bradford is a former recipient of the ADA Scholarship, Joint Council Alumni Scholarship and other awards. Bradford is currently top in his class and a member of Psi Omega.

He previously trained and studied as a structural engineer, but instead chose dentistry because of its many new opportunities and challenges in micro engineering, especially in restorative dentistry and oral implantology. Bradford plans to specialize in endodontics and will begin his residency next fall at the University of Florida at Gainsville.
