Jane Locke, MUSC get Champions for Change award

When the new Healthcare Professions instructor at North Charleston High School discovered the status of her classroom and the fact that she had no equipment with which to teach the students in her class, Jane Locke, Outreach Services coordinator at MUSC, went into action.

Jane first learned of North Charleston High School's need for equipment through her participation as chairperson on the Healthcare Pathway Advisory Council for the school. “Jane made the necessary calls to allow us access to the surplus warehouse at MUSC and we got to pick what we needed to make our classroom complete,” said Karen Arnold, registered nurse and instructor for Introduction to Healthcare Professions. “Everything from electric hospital beds to IV stands, utility carts, first aid supplies, a stretcher, an exam table, a wheelchair, and instructor's chair now outfit our classroom and have transformed it into a lab setting for real-world learning.”

The supplies and equipment that MUSC donated will save the school more than $15,000. “If we had to purchase this equipment, we may never have gotten it. Even with grant dollars now available to us, these kinds of donations are critical to being able to provide the types of classrooms and labs that students should have,” said Tommy Mullins, principal at North Charleston High School.  In addition to helping secure equipment for North Charleston High School, Locke also serves as co-chair of the Charleston County School District's Career and Technology Education Advisory Council, chair of the Healthcare Pathway Advisory Council for North Charleston High and has been a long-time advocate for public education and career preparation activities in the Charleston region.

Because of her outstanding dedication to public education, The Education Foundation inducted Jane B. Locke and the Medical University of South Carolina into the Hall of Change. “Giving Jane the Champions for Change award was an honor. Her outstanding support of the Foundation and public education in our region and MUSC's generosity epitomize what the Champions for Change recognition is all about,” said Anita Zucker, chairman of The Education Foundation.
