Senate retreat to discuss faculty tenure, advancement

The Faculty Senate will discuss tenure for faculty members at a retreat set for 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in room 435 of the Basic Science Building.
The retreat is entitled, “Faculty Tenure: Quo Vadis.”

“A faculty tenure document ought to mean more than just a piece of paper guaranteeing your job,” said Faculty Senate secretary Subbi Mathur, Ph.D. Mathur has organized the retreat with the support of the Senate Executive Council and with senate members, who chose the title.

“The Faculty Senate is interested in educating its members on how different colleges deal with faculty tenure so that it can help to educate and counsel younger faculty members on the art of obtaining tenure in their respective jobs.” Mathur said that the senate also is interested in knowing how women faculty members fare in their attempts to obtain tenure and offers resources for women faculty members to enhance their professional accomplishments.

“I have had enthusiastic response from our president and all the deans who are going to talk to us about what they perceive to be requirements and conditions for faculty tenure in their colleges,” Mathur said.

The Faculty Senate Retreat will also feature a “Meet with the Expert” luncheon session with immediate past senate chair Adrian Reuben, M.D. Reuben is charged with inducting the new Faculty Senate members and to offer directives for the retreat based on his experiences as Faculty Senate chair.

The Faculty Senate Retreat is meant to contribute to a healthy dialog between the administration and the Faculty Senate. The dialog will contribute to an enriched strategic planning course for MUSC, based on mutual understanding and good will, Mathur said.
