Letters to MUSC President Dr. Greenberg

Since becoming president, I (we) have received many letters commending our faculty and staff for outstanding patient care. These letters, or excerpts from letters, from patients and their families provide ample evidence of their high regard for our clinical services. I am pleased to share some of them with you, and recognize those who are providing skilled and compassionate care.

Dear Mr. ( Rick Paul) Holmes:
I just wanted to thank you for your help in getting me seen urgently at the Storm Eye Institute on Monday. I was pretty sure my problem was minor, although very annoying, and I certainly didn’t expect to see Dr. Solomon within a few hours of my call, as you arranged.

I also would like to compliment the staff of the second floor ambulatory clinic area who were unfailingly polite and solicitous.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent care that I received during my visit and treatment at the Digestive Disease Center.

All of the personnel were very pleasant and helpful. I would like to mention some of the nurses and attendants that I met in the Endoscopy Unit and on the post-operative floor. There are those I would have added, but because of sedation, I do not remember their names.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I doubt that a hospital stay is seldom described as pleasant, so I will break the mold! In the past six months both my wife and I have been patients at MUSC.

My wife's care was under the direction of Drs. Maes, Lal, Frei-Lahr and her therapeutic plasma exchange was carefully monitored by Tine, Jesse, and Lynn Barber. The care she received from all and each of these folks was just outstanding and we remain grateful to them.

I was in the capable hands of Dr. Bruce Elliott and his staff and from my first chat with Dr. Elliott I felt total confidence in his ability. The entire essentially frightening process from check in to discharge was smooth—no glitches. The nurses in the pre- and post op areas were patient and caring and obliviously concerned about me. Very reassuring and your anesthesiologist was a terrific guy who listened to my concerns, explained his role in the process and then returned after the surgery.

Bottom line is that I hope you pass along to all your staff our kudos and heart felt thanks.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
On Aug. 9 our 36-year-old was admitted to MUSC after drinking ettuglene glycol; he was not expected to survive. Thanks to prayer and excellent medical care, he did and is now well on his way to recovery.

For the past month I’ve been trying to write a National and objective thank you letter to you and your staff to express our sincere gratitude. It can’t be done. Please extend our thanks and gratitude to all of them.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I take this opportunity to commend all the caring staff at the hospital as well as the Hollings Cancer Center who have been involved with my wife’s case. There are many and, I am sorry to say, I do not know the names of all I would like to commend. Several, however, are due special commendations: Dr. Rayna Kneuper Hall, Dr. Mark Green, and Janet Bloch, RN, and then there is young Dr. Michael Wilson (a pulmonary fellow, I believe) whom I would urge you to keep at MUSC as long as possible—he might well be Dr. Mark Green of the next generation.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
My daughter has been ill for three years, and under the care of your Pain Clinic. Because of her constant pain, Dr. Arthur Smith has been largely responsible for her care. He and Drs. Greer and Gilbreth, as well as the nursing staff, have been infinitely patient. I’ve been wanting to write you concerning the amazing ability the Pain Clinic has, in all its areas of responsibility, to handle the hundreds of patients they must deal with daily. I have sat in the waiting room watching patients with every conceivable form of painful afflictions, greeted as though they were the only patient needing attention! Truly, your staff must be blessed with a grace granted only to those who truly care about their medical presence.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
Due to some confusion in the location of an appointment for a stress test on Sept. 4, I was at Rutledge Tower and running late. In attempting to locate the correct place, I become lost in the Children’s Hospital. A lovely, young dark haired woman found me and insisted on taking me to my proper location which was on sixth floor Cardiology. If she had not found me, I would have been even later. Her name is Connie Ress and she works in Pharmacology. Her concern for my welfare made me more comfortable in this situation of being both lost and late.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I want to commend Sara Paul and Dennis Hamlett both of Cardiology who conducted my stress test. They were reassuring and comforting and did the stress test with a minimum of effort on my part. I was pleased with their attitude and their concern.

Dear Sir:
I am writing as a patient of the Medical University’s Digestive Disease Center. I had been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 1997. From the beginning of my diagnosis to the treatment of my disease, physicians assistant Merriman Dowdle, has been wonderful. With no knowledge of Crohn’s disease, Ms. Dowdle came to me with an arm load of information and a hand to hold. She fulfills the tall order of expert clinician to comforting friend. I want to commend her on her superior efforts as a physicians assistant and recognize her good work to the Medical University’s community.

Dear Dr. Taylor:
Thank you for taking care of our son during all of his cardiology procedures and surgeries. You and your team of dedicated workers have essentially saved his life and we are grateful for that.

Dear Drs. Bach, Yamaguchi, Bowie, Park, Derrick and all others who assisted in my daughter’s jaw surgery; the staff on duty in PACU; and all staff members at 7A, Children’s Hospital.

For the first time in many years, my daughter came home happy after picture day at school. In previous years, her school had a photographer who made her miserable by telling her to “try and close your lips together and smile,” not knowing that he really was asking the impossible. This year, the school hired a new photographer who complemented her smile and commented that “he just knew her pictures would turn out great!” It is amazing the new found confidence that a beautiful smile can bring.

It would be my pleasure to refer anyone in need of care to MUSC Hospital and the Department of Oral Surgery.
