Children will follow bridge run April 7

A child friendly run will be held in conjunction with the 24th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run held April 7, giving children a chance to join in the spirit of fitness and good health.

Sponsored by MUSC Children's Health, the Kids Run will be held at 10 a.m. following the Bridge Run, giving families plenty of time to participate in both activities. The course will be well-marked around Calhoun Park, the site of the post-race expo. Calhoun Park is located near the SC Aquarium and across from the Maritime Center.

“It's a great way to get across the idea of healthy living rather than competition at this age,” said Elizabeth Letourneau, Kids Run coordinator.

The run is geared toward children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Unlike the Bridge Run, the Kids Run is not a race—all entrants receive a competition number, and all who complete the one-mile course receive a finisher's medal, compliments of MUSC Children's Health.

Tim Arem from T-Bone Productions International, a fitness educator and professional runner, will lead the several hundred participants in pre-race warm-ups and encourage the children as they run. He also will entertain the crowd with his high-energy performance of T-Bone's Magic and Fitness Adventure!, described as “an interactive stage spectacular of music, world-class magic, fitness and mayhem.”

The Children's Health tent in Calhoun Park will feature fitness and wellness information, along with games and activities for the whole family. Each registered runner will receive a goody bag with crayons, coloring books and other treats. Beverages, provided by Desani, and fruit, provided by Bi-Lo, will also be available.

Applications can be obtained at participating Chick-Fil-A restaurants, Bi-Lo groceries, many area sports stores, the MUSC Harper Student Center or downloaded from the Bridge Run Web site at <http://www.bridgerun.com>.  Packets can be picked up at Gaillard Auditorium April 5 - 6, 8 a.m.  to 8 p.m. No race day registrations will be accepted.

The Kid's Run is free and T-shirts are $8. Checks should be made out to Cooper River Bridge Run and mailed, along with applications, to PO Box 22089, Charleston, SC 29413.
