Stine awarded Order of Silver Crescent

Gordan B. Stine, DDS, DHL, special assistant to the dean of the College of Dental Medicine, has been awarded an Order of the Silver Crescent by Gov. James Hodges.

“It is because of your dedication to all South Carolinians that I am pleased to award you an Order of the Silver Crescent,” Hodges wrote in his letter announcing the award. “You are being recognized not for one single achievement, but for a lifetime of accomplishments that have benefitted the citizens of South Carolina.”

Noted by the governor was Stine's service “as a guiding force in enhancing the dentistry profession both in South Carolina and throughout the nation.” Hodges also praised his “dedication to your community through your volunteer efforts” as being that “which truly distinguishes you for the Order of the Silver Crescent.”

Stine served as special assistant to the president for 14 years and as director for dental continuing education, and has been awarded the university's Distinguished Faculty Service Award. He has served as state dental coordinator for the S.C. Area Health Education Consortium, founded the Dental Lifelong Learning Fund at MUSC, and participated actively in national and international professional organizations, including the prestigious Pierre Fouchard Academy. He has served as chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party and as a member of the Charleston County Council.

Stine is an avid supporter of the fine arts and has been active in many educational, civic and charitable organizations, including a deep association with the Coastal Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts dating back to the mid-50s. He is an active alumnus of the College of Charleston and supports that institution's activities and direction into the future.

Stine has received the Order of the Palmetto, once the state's highest civilian award, from three separate governors.
