Blood Donation Center challenges  departments to give blood

by Jan Sullivan, RN
MUSC—American Red Cross Blood Donation Center
Wow! Health Information and Patient Access Services (medical records, admissions and utilization management) did a great job sponsoring donations for Tuesday, Feb. 27, and Wednesday, Feb. 28. The department donated 23 units of blood! Four people from other departments also donated, bringing the total to 27 units. Seven of these individuals were first time donors. Thanks for your donation.

If your department would like to challenge this, call for information 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesday, at 792-0219.

Here are some facts that show our  need for blood:

  • Each unit of blood donated can help three people. It is processed into packed red blood cells, plasma and platelets
  • MUHA uses an average of 52 units of red blood cells daily
  • MUSC is the single largest user of blood in the state due to the fact that it is a transplant center. A single liver transplant requires up to 125 units of blood
  • Hospitals in the Charleston area require an average of 150 units of blood daily. Dorchester, Charleston and Berkeley counties donate only 80 to 100 units of blood daily
  • During chemo and radiation therapy, cancer patients often receive blood transfusions daily
  • Almost everyone one that lives to be at least 75 years of age will need blood at least once in their life.

Blood donors were: Rata Dasgupta, Deborah Brown, Deborah Gautt, Eugene DiPaolo, Velma Wigfall, SueEllen Coningsby, Neil Kinard, Terri Dunham, Kathleen Gibbs, Gail Mack, Ann Harris, T.C. Gainey, Ann Jenkins, Brenda Bailey, Leslie Godwin, Christine Lewis, Leslie Smalls, Sue Pletcher, Karen Richburg, Ann Shuler, Judi Budinger, Toni Johnson and William Faught.
