Magill Laser Center has new home

The Storm Eye Institute and Magill Laser Center formally
opened their Mount Pleasant location April 5 with MUSC administrators touting the cooperation among local health care facilities represented there.

The laser center moved to Mount Pleasant on Feb. 19 from its former location on the MUSC campus to its new location in Suite 101 at 735 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard.

Speaking at the grand opening, M. Edward Wilson, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, said that physicians from Roper, Trident and East Cooper hospitals have had procedures done there and have referred their patients there.

The center covers the ground floor of the executive office building and includes two operating rooms with glass walls through which a patient's family can observe with patient consent. “We do this in the spirit of sharing and learning,” said Kerry Solomon, M.D., Magill Laser Center medical director and associate professor of ophthalmology. “Word-of-mouth has been our greatest recruiting tool.”

Grand opening speakers included MUSC President Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D.; Wilson; Pawek-Vallotton Professor David J. Apple, M.D., Solomon.

The Magill Laser Center, founded in 1994, is South Carolina's first laser facility. It was established by a $1.2 million donation from Arthur F. and Alice H. (Holly) Magill.
