Apple establishes China-SEI collaboration

On March 17, David J. Apple, M.D., an expert in the field of ocular pathology and cataract, intraocular lens, and refractive surgical research and director of the Center for Research on Ocular Therapeutics and Biodevices at the Storm Eye Institute, visited the China Medical University (CMU) in Shenyang.

Dr. David Apple is presented with the Honorary Professor Award by Kuihe Jin, president of the China Medical University in Shenyang, China.

CMU is one of the oldest and top-rated medical universities in China, where the first cornea transplantation and first phacoemulsification procedures in China were performed.

Apple gave a full-day lecture on the evolution, complications and future trends of intraocular lens and cataract surgery. More than 100 ophthalmologists and researchers attended, most being senior surgeons from all over China.

Lecture attendees received new information on the topic of lens implants, especially posterior capsule opacification and other complications. He described what he has learned from his studies regarding means of achieving better cataract surgical results.

New surgical techniques and new knowledge about IOL material as a means of achieving better cataract surgical results were presented to the audience. He was accompanied by Dr. Qun Peng, assistant professor in his institute, who also gave a lecture.

The opening ceremony, establishing the China-American Collaborative Laboratory for Cataract and Intraocular Lens Research by CMU and the Storm Eye Institute, was held. This center continues Apple's work in the field of developing world ophthalmology, including his work as a Collaborative Center with the World Health Organization.

The international cooperation in this field between China and the United States will turn over a new leaf. The People's Republic of China is one of the largest countries in the world, with a population of 1.3 billion people, as compared to the United States' 280 million.

Apple received an Honorary Professor Award, the highest award given by the university, recommended by the department chairman, Jinsong Zhang, professor.

An Honorary Doctor Degree of Humane Letters for Apple has been approved by the university and final approval will be announced after a required review in June by the State Department, People's Republic of China.
