Weekend bone marrow drive to help local resident

For Folly Beach resident Linda Lee, scanning the Lowcountry for prime spots and golden sunsets was her career as a location scout and manager for the film industry. Today, she's focused on finding a bone marrow transplant match to help save her life.

Just four years ago, Lee was diagnosed with Waldenstrom's Macro-globulinaemia, a rare but serious form of leukemia that normally affects older men and women. The 52-year-old Lee is actively seeking a lifesaving match from an unrelated bone marrow donor through the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. Volunteers give a small amount of blood for typing and consent to be listed. The program promotes bone marrow transplants in patients diagnosed with leukemia, sickle cell anemia and other life-threatening blood diseases.

On Saturday, April 7, MUSC's Transplant Services will sponsor a bone marrow drive for Lee following the 24th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run. A free screening is available to the first 300 volunteers who visit the MUSC Transplant tent located nearby the event's finish line at Calhoun Park. The lab fee for screening, $75, will be sponsored by donations from the Rick Hendrick Foundation and Janet C. Smith Foundation.

For more information about the drive, contact the MUSC Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, 792-9250.
