MUSC Library introduces desktop document delivery

As part of its ongoing commitment to providing efficient service to the MUSC community, Library Document Delivery Services (interlibrary loans) is pleased to introduce a Web-based document delivery system of journal articles and book chapters.

The next time the library obtains a journal article or book chapter from another library (or from the MUSC Library collection), the library patron will have the option of selecting a PDF File as the preferred delivery method.

What is a PDF file? PDF stands for Portable Document Format, which provides a digital representation of the document that is nearly identical to the original.  PDF is quickly becoming a standard on the World Wide Web. Receiving and viewing documents as PDF files is a simple procedure, and system requirements are those commonly found on most computers today.

All that is needed is a PC or Macintosh computer with the following  specifications.
1. PC: Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or higher, 8Mb of RAM minimum (16 Mb recommended), 100 Mb available space on hard drive; Macintosh: System 7.1 or higher, 8Mb of RAM minimum (16 Mb recommended, 80 Mb available space on hard drive)
2.  E-mail account
3. Netscape or Internet Explorer (Version 3.0 or higher
4. Laser printer (recommended)
5. Adobe Acrobat Reader (available as a free download from Adobe Systems (a link to Adobe Systems is included with each document delivered)

Once the library has received the article or book chapter requested, an e-mail message will be sent that will include a username, PIN number and a Web address link where the document can be retrieved. All the information needed to retrieve each document will be included in each e-mail notification. No memorization of passwords, PINs or logins will be necessary.

Each PDF document can be accessed up to five times within a two-week period during which time it can be viewed, printed or saved. After the document is viewed five times or two weeks have passed, whichever comes first, it will automatically be removed from the system.

This new service will require no increase in the present pricing structure for document delivery services.  In addition, traditional delivery methods will remain in place for those who do not have the necessary system requirements to receive or view PDF files.

Document Delivery Services is excited about this new delivery option. Questions and requests for  additional information can be obtained at 792-2379.
