Brady to receive SC Woman of Achievement Award

Kathleen Brady, M.D., Ph.D., will receive the South Carolina Woman of Achievement Award in ceremonies Monday, May 14, at the Governor’s Mansion Complex.

Brady, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, is one of eight women from across the state to be honored with the award that was created to celebrate the contributions that South Carolina women have made to the state and nation.

The Governor’s Commission on Women selected the awardees based on nominations. Criteria include making significant contributions in their fields of expertise that have a lasting impact on the community, serving as exceptional role models and mentors for young women, and providing leadership through motivating others.

As an MUSC faculty member Brady teaches young women during medical school and residency, helping them prepare to be competent, caring psychiatrists. She coordinates substance abuse training for psychiatric residents and directs the addiction psychiatry fellowship program at MUSC's Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs.

Brady has contributed ground-breaking research in the areas of drug and alcohol abuse/addiction. She has conducted research in areas of special significance to women, including the co-occurrence of substance abuse with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety.  She has designed and directed numerous research projects and most recently was awarded a $13 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Addiction.  The grant supports a project that will bring new treatments from specialized treatment and research settings to community settings across the state.
