CCIT offers new hire computer orientation

With the overwhelming feelings and confusion at the start of a new job, new folks would like to be as prepared as possible when they begin. Right?

MUSC definitely wants everyone to get off on the right foot.

To help, CCIT implemented a New Hire Computer Orientation in September 2000.  This Computer Orientation is held in conjunction with the general MUSC Orientation and all MUSC Medical Center, UMA, and IOP new employees attend.

Those who attend orientation receive a unique ClinLAN username to log into MUSC’s computer network.  They also learn how to use the ClinLAN autolog workstations for easier and faster access to the ClinLAN network and its applications.

New hires learn how to use Simon to text-page someone through the computer, how to access MUSC’s policies and procedures through the intranet and how to install printers.

Because of the prevalent use of e-mail at MUSC, all new hires receive training on GroupWise e-mail and are shown how to access GroupWise from home via GroupWise WebAccess.

New hires who work in a clinical area also receive OACIS training. OACIS is MUSC’s data repository for patient information. All clinical new hires receive a unique OACIS ID that is used to log into the OACIS system.

In OACIS, new hires learn how to pull a census of patients for inpatient units, build customized patients rosters (lists), access results on patients, print patient results from OACIS and also how to access OACIS from home via WebApps.

In addition, RNs receive training on how to perform census management in OACIS and how to use HARP (the Home-care Agency Referral Program).

When does this training take place?

Every other week Human Resources holds a general orientation session for all new hires, during which the CCIT trainers  have new hires complete the necessary security forms for obtaining ClinLAN and OACIS accounts.

Next, the new hires sign up for a training session later that week and are given directions to the new training room, conveniently located in the main hospital, room 225A (formerly the rehab recreation room).

All new hires leave orientation with an introduction to MUSC’s systems. They know that their GroupWise and OACIS (if applicable) IDs and passwords work and understand the various ways to log into a ClinLAN workstation.

With the new hire computer training in place, our new associates can hit the floors and departments feeling more efficient and more comfortable with their computer-based resources!
