Nickel honored with national pharmacy educators award

Dr. Ron Nickel

Ron O. Nickel, Ph.D., associate professor and dean of Continuing Education for the College of Pharmacy was awarded the “Phil Naut Award” at the Annual Meeting of the Pharmacy Technician Educators Council (PTEC) meeting held in Toronto in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, July 7-11.

This award is given to someone who is not an educator of technicians but who has been actively involved and supportive of PTEC and technician education.

Nickel has been personally involved with PTEC from its very inception here in South Carolina. It was started by Don Ballington of Midlands Technical College in Columbia. The College of Pharmacy has provided continuing education program support from that time to the present. He has also acted as an unofficial liaison between PTEC and AACP. Nickel was asked to give the opening or keynote presentation of the three-day PTEC program series. Sixty-five technician educators from across the United States and Canada attended the meetings.

PTEC is an international organization representing pharmacy technician educators in the U.S. and Canada. The organization has worked tirelessly to improve the quality and availability of pharmacy technician education. They were instrumental in developing a model curriculum for technician education in conjunction with the American Society of Health System Pharmacists.

Phil Naut, whom the award is named after, was a pharmacist at Emory University Hospital and a past president of the Pharmacy Technician Educator Council. Naut served the council in many ways, including maintaining the organization’s newsletter and establishing a Web page for the organization.
