Lopes-Virella delivers Edwin Bierman Lecture at ADA meeting

Maria Lopes-Virella, Ph.D., professor of medicine at MUSC, was recognized on June 24 at the National Meeting of the American Diabetes Association held in Philadelphia for her outstanding contributions to the study of the pathogenesis of diabetes complications.

She received a plaque and delivered the Edwin Bierman Lecture, instituted in 1998, to honor Dr. Edwin Bierman’s memory.

Dr. Bierman was an outstanding investigator in the field of diabetes complications in the latter part of the 20th Century. He left a great legacy not only from his published work, but also in his past collaborators that have continued his work in some of the premier medical centers of the nation.

Lopes-Virella is also a member of the staff at the Ralph E. Johnson VAMC, where she is a faculty member of the Department of Pathology and chief of the Nutrition Support Team.

The recipient of the Edwin Bierman Lectureship is chosen annually by a selection committee of the Council on Complications of the American Diabetes Association. Lopes-Virella is the second faculty member from MUSC to be honored in successive years.  John Colwell, M.D., presented last year’s Bierman lecture.
