Meet...Martha

Name: Martha Mack.

Department: Admissions.

Family: Mother of three; grandmother of seven: Andrew, 15, Martha, 14, Montez, 13, Mackey, 8, Jasmine, 9, Josh, 6, Jordan, 2.

Dish that you cook for special occasions: Seafood gumbo.

Favorite restaurant: Alice's Fine Foods on King Street.

Favorite chore: Yard work.

Favorite ingredient: Garlic.

Pet peeve: People who say  “I can't.”

Worst habit: Eating chocolate.

Special talent: I speak Gullah. I did a Gullah reading here one Christmas and I read to my grandchildren to keep the tradition.

What do you find most rewarding about your job? Getting involved with the patients. I find it rewarding to help a patient get over their fear of being in a hospital. Sometimes I have to sit and pray with them until they feel better.

Church you belong to: Calvary Baptist Church. I sing in the gospel choir the first and third Sunday of every month and I teach Sunday school every Sunday.

Accomplishment you are most proud of: Getting my children through college.

Personality trait you admire in others: Caring.

Dream vacation: Hawaii! I've never been there!

Hobbies: I like to do cross-stitch and sometimes crochet.

If you suddenly had a free day, what would you do? I'd go sight-seeing right here in Charleston. I’d like to go see the Hunley with my own eyes.

Most treasured material possession: Family photos with my grandchildren.

Plans for the future: I am going to theology school. I want to be an evangelist and travel.
