MUSC speech pathologist chosen as STAR recipient

MUSC speech pathologist Katy Hufnagle was the recipient of this year's STAR Award on Aug. 7.

Eleven-year-old Paul Nimmich presents Katy Hufnagle with her STAR Award in recognition of her work with children with disabilities and special needs. The award is sponsored by the Parent Advisory Council for Special Education.

The STAR Awards, sponsored by the Charleston County School District and the South Carolina Aquarium, are presented annually by the Parent Advisory Council for Special Education to individuals who have contributed greatly to the education and socialization of children with a variety of disabilities.

The love and special talents of these award recipients help children with special needs learn and develop skills so they, in turn, may become “stars.”

Hufnagle has been practicing at MUSC for more than 15 years within her pediatric specialty. Her expertise lies in managing disorders of phonology, cranial facial abnormalities, and reading in language-disordered children. Hufnagle’s honor comes in recognition of the lives of many special children she has benefitted in the Lowcountry community.
