SGA president welcomes students to MUSC

by Tom Dozier, President
MUSC Student Government Association
The MUSC Student Government Association (SGA) is here to ensure that students get the most out of their time here, both academically and socially. We've been working throughout the summer and have an exciting program of activities planned for your recreation and enjoyment. For new students and for those of you who've been here awhile and still haven't figured out who we are and what we do, the following is a list of questions and answers you might find helpful:

“How do I find out what’s going on?”
Student Lifelines and Semester Highlights are published at regular intervals by the Student Programs Office and delivered to your campus mailboxes. They both contain a wealth of information about campuswide events and programs, so keep an eye out for them. In addition, the MUSC SGA Website has been redesigned and should prove very valuable in keeping you informed, so check it out periodically at <http://www.musc.edu/sga>!

“What exactly is the MUSC SGA?”
SGA is universitywide, being composed of five executive officers and representatives from all MUSC classes in all six colleges, and we work to make certain that all of your opinions are heard, your interests are served, and your free time is filled. In order to accomplish our goals, we must know what you’re thinking. Find out who your representatives are, and be sure they’re aware of what's on your mind. We meet twice a month on Wednesday evenings to resolve issues and plan events.

“What do SGA Representatives do?”
SGA members belong to one of five committees:

  • Student Welfare: Chaired by the SGA president (Tom Dozier), this committee focuses on student satisfaction on campus (i.e. safety, health services, Harper Student Center, etc.)
  • Academic Affairs: Chaired by the vice president for academic affairs (Neil Wiater), this committee is concerned with academic life (i.e. study rooms, honor code, library services, financial aid, PACE evaluations, etc.).
  • Programs: Chaired by the vice president for programs (Thomas Phillips), this committee plans and executes social, cultural, family, and recreational activities (See the above mentioned resources for more info on these!).
  • Service: Chaired by the treasurer (Rebecca Gregg), this committee works to encourage and coordinate the numerous volunteer opportunities both on and off campus.
  • Communications: Chaired by the secretary (Rob Russell), this committee works to keep the MUSC SGA Web site a useful and up-to-date site.
“How do I cope with the stress of such rigorous classwork?”
Take advantage of all that MUSC has to offer and do something besides school! You can get involved in so many ways; on a class, college, university, or community level. For volunteer opportunities, see Liz Sheridan in the MUSC Gives Back office (792-4094). The Student Programs Office (792-2693) is always there with various entertaining events. Jump in with both feet and let us hear if there’s anything else you’d like to see!

“How do I become part of the SGA?” (most frequently asked question, of course!)
Run for an SGA class office! New student elections are held early in fall term, and you won’t be disappointed with your experience, just ask any of the current members!

Finally, know that SGA is always here for the students. Never hesitate to contact me by phone (763-9822) or by e-mail (dozierts@musc.edu). Take care and enjoy the means to whatever end you are seeking. I look forward to meeting you at one of our events!
