National Primary Care Week scheduled at MUSC

Don’t miss the upcoming events planned for National Primary Care Week at MUSC, Oct. 14-17. 

National Primary Care Week (NPCW) is a student-led initiative coordinated by the MUSC Office of Community Medicine and South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium. This event highlights primary care careers and demonstrates the tremendous need for primary care providers, especially in rural and underserved communities. 

The following presentations are planned to commemorate NPCW at MUSC:

“Improving the Health of the Community…From Disparity toward Prosperity”
Monday, Oct. 14, Noon to 1 p.m., 
Basic Science Building Auditorium.
The MUSC Public Health Interest Group is sponsoring this presentation by MUSC President Raymond S. Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., and Marilyn P. Laken, Ph.D., R.N., professor and associate dean for Community Development, College of Nursing. 

The Monday brown bag presentation is also the first in a special lecture series entitled “Contemporary Issues in Prevention.”  The Catalyst will provide dates of future lectures in the series during the coming months. 

Medical students who attend at least five of the seven lectures between October and April 2003 will qualify for special mention in their dean’s letters.

“Primary Health Care in the 21st Century: A Team Effort”
Tuesday, Oct. 15, Noon to 1 p.m., 
Basic Science Building Auditorium.
The seminar will be a panel discussion sponsored by MUSC Family Medicine Interest Group. 

The participants will be Maria Gibson, M.D., Susan Barger, and Catherine Francis-Baldesari, from the Department of Family Medicine.

They will discuss the roles and contributions of the various clinicians in a successful practice. Lunch will be provided for seminar participants only by the State Office of Rural Health, Department of Family Medicine, and the Office of the Provost.

“Professionalism or Commercialism: The Changing Face of Medicine”
Wednesday, Oct. 16, Noon to 1 p.m.,
Basic Science Building Auditorium.
South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (SC AHEC) is sponsoring this presentation by William H. Hester, M.D., program director of the McLeod Family Medicine Residency Program in Florence. 

Hester is the recipient of the Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award  and has served as program director at McLeod for 21 years. Lunch will be provided for conference participants only by SC AHEC.

“Decisions and Transitions…Residency to Primary Care Practice”
Thursday, Oct. 17, Noon to 1 p.m., 
Basic Science Building Auditorium
SIP (Students Interested in Pediatrics) is sponsoring this presentation by Anne Marie Puckhaber, M.D., a 2002 MUSC Pediatrics Residency graduate and a partner at Palmetto Pediatrics in Charleston. 

She will describe what is has been like to enter the real world of primary care practice. Lunch will be provided for conference participants only by Students Interested in Pediatrics.
