The College of Dental Medicine hosted its fourth annual “Dental Day” event on Sept. 20. The college invited students and advisors from around the state to get a first-hand look at what it has to offer.

“We are trying to get the word out about the field of dentistry, to spark an interest in more students,” said Gwendolyn B. Brown, DMD, director of diversity at the College of Dental Medicine. “The applicant pool at the college has been low,” said Brown, “we hope that Dental Day will promote the College of Dental Medicine and MUSC.”

It turns out Brown may be fulfilling aspirations for the effect of Dental Day, because this year was the biggest outcome yet and the applicants for the college are on the rise.

A total of 28 students and eight advisors represented 11 South Carolina colleges including; College of Charleston, SC State University, Francis Marion University, Benedict College, Furman University, The Citadel, USC, Winthrop, Coastal Carolina University, Clemson and Wofford College.

Students and advisors had an opportunity to get a feel for what the College of Dental Medicine has to offer. A presentation was given by Charles Hook, DMD, associate dean for clinical affairs. Other topics of interest were application overviews and admission requirements.

The day's events also included a tour of the college and MUSC, a presentation at the McCaulay Dental Museum and a visit to the gross anatomy lab where prospective students caught a glimpse of what they would expect if they attended the college.

A conclusion of the day's events was a lunch at the Solomon Conference Room. There, students and advisors participated in a question-and-answer session.

“The students and advisors enjoyed the events of Dental Day,” said Brown. She hopes that Dental Day will continue to spark an interest in the dental field and students will further their education at the College of Dental Medicine.
