Classroom upgrades given green light for projectors, computers

by Geoffrey A. Freeman
Educational Technology Services and Distance Education
The Provost’s Office has approved a plan that authorizes $600,000 to fund necessary classroom improvements across the campus during the next three years.  The plan was developed by a subcommittee of the University Educational Infrastructure Committee (UEIC) using input from the faculty and staff of all six colleges.

Improvements are prioritized based on classroom usage rates and needed technology, and will include technology enhancements such as LCD projectors, computers, sound systems, and even Internet Protocol (IP) video access.

The project will also address many classroom maintenance issues such as broken window blinds and room lighting. Two rooms, Clinical Sciences Building room 628 and Basic Science Building room 435, are scheduled to receive new tables and chairs that will allow for more flexible student seating.

The Office of Educational Technology Services is overseeing the plan and has already begun its implementation. Three College of Nursing rooms, CON 104, 110, and 116, have already been equipped with new LCD projectors. One major improvement will be the retrofitting of all audio-visual controls into one standard control system for each classroom. This will allow faculty to learn one set of controls instead of learning many different sets dependent on the room they are using. A standard podium is also being designed to further standardize the teaching environment.

Classrooms scheduled for improvements are Administration/Library Building room 100 and 107, Baruch Auditorium, BSB 100, 202, 302, 402, 435, and 502, Canon Office Building 301 and 305, College of Nursing 104, 110, 116, 322, 403, and 524, CSB 419 and 628, Quadrangle F 302A, 302B, and 310, the Storm Eye Auditorium (HA809), and Harper Student Center 410.

Questions regarding the upgrade schedule or the plan in general may be addressed to the Office of Educational Technology Services at 792-4984, or classroomsupport@musc.edu.
