Blood donor competition boosts winning teams, numbers

They came, they saw, they gave.

With donation numbers skyrocketing past last year’s monthly totals, the winners for the first quarter of the MUSC American Red Cross Blood Donor Competition are the Laboratory Lifesavers and the Cannon Street Blood Clots.

The Laboratory Lifesavers catapulted to a number one slot a few weeks ago when they were the first team to donate 25 units. Cannon Street Blood Clots pushed to the forefront as the team donating the most units.

Competition tightened as all 28 teams raced to make the end of September deadline and several teams were only a few units behind the winners.

The winning teams are the recipients of the following prizes: each Lifesaver will receive a pothos plant donated by George Hyams of Hyams Garden Center on James Island and each Blood Clot will receive a South Carolina Aquarium entrance ticket courtesy of Chris Andrews, director of the aquarium.

But this is only the beginning.

The second quarter of the year-long competition began Oct. 1 and will end on Dec. 31 so it’s time to motivate once again.

To form a team, hand in a list of members, or make an appointment, contact Annie Lovering of the Red Cross at loverina@musc.edu or call 792-0219.
