Pro-Celebrity Challenge scheduled for Oct. 19 - 21

MUSC's Children’s Hospital Fund will host this year’s Kiawah Pro-Celebrity Challenge, scheduled for Oct. 19-21 at Kiawah Island.

Headlining the tour pros are Rich Beem, who outdueled Tiger Woods one month ago at the PGA Championship to win his first major, and Fred Couples, the former Masters champion and veteran of the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches at Kiawah.  Leading the celebrity field are NFL quarterback legends John Elway and Dan Marino as well as 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Jarrett.

The Kiawah Pro-Celebrity Challenge, now in its third year as a Celebrity Players Tour event, will be held at The Kiawah Island Club’s private course, Cassique, designed by Tom Watson, and Kiawah Island Resorts’ Turtle Point, designed and recently renovated by Jack Nicklaus.  Both venues feature dramatic new clubhouses that opened last winter.

The spectator portion of the three-day event takes place Oct. 21, at Turtle Point.  The new format calls for 30 three-man teams featuring one tour pro paired with two celebrities, expanded from 16 two-man teams as in the past. The winning team earns $15,000 per player out of a total purse of $250,000.

“The larger field means we’ll have competition going on all day, which makes it easier for spectators to take in the action,” said Kathryn Sherrod, executive director of the event.  “Having Nicklaus and Watson courses, and in particular being able to use their new clubhouses, has been a wonderful draw for our sponsors.”

A two-day Celeb-Am, through which most of the tournament funds are raised, takes place Oct. 19 and 20, at Cassique and Turtle Point.  The Celeb-Am is closed to the public, but a limited number of playing spots remain available.

All tournament proceeds benefit research and education at the MUSC Children’s Hospital.  Since its inception in 1994, the event has generated more than $1.3 million for the hospital.

Additionally, the event will be televised by The Golf Channel and broadcast nationwide in prime time on Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. EST. It will re-air four times: Nov. 30 at 11 p.m. EST (8 p.m. PST), Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. EST, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. EST, and Dec. 21 at 2 a.m. EST.
