MUSC's Bell to deliver CSU commencement address Dec. 14

Thaddeus J. Bell, M.D., director of the MUSC Office of Diversity, will deliver the commencement address for Charleston Southern University Dec. 14 at Lightsey Chapel Auditorium. He will address graduates, faculty and guests on “Lessons Learned from Generations Past.”

Bell will also receive the honorary degree of doctor of science during the ceremony.

Bell has been a family practice physician in Charleston since 1986. He helped establish the Family Health Center in Cross in 1981 and volunteered his services there for nine years. Bell was team physician for CSU from 1989 to the present.

In 1993 he joined with Bob Schlau and formed the Bell and Schlau Track and Field Seminar, which annually brings world-class athletes to Charleston to help promote fitness and health, working directly with area children. 

Bell was named Physician of the Year in 1996 by the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, and in 1995 was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame for 100 Black Men of South Carolina. He received the MUSC Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1992 and the Distinguished Graduate Award from South Carolina State University in 1993. 

Bell chaired the South Carolina Governance Council on Physical Fitness and Health from 1988 to 1997.

Charleston Southern University will honor 187 candidates for graduation, 32 candidates for graduate degrees and 155 candidates for undergraduate degrees.
