See Emerald shine at MUSC

Dee Norton is an administrative assistant in the Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.

She has worked at MUSC since March 1998. She uses the OACIS transcription macro to enter office notes into the system.

“OACIS transcription allows clinics and other hospital departments to see dictated office notes shortly after each visit,” Norton said.

Can you describe an instance where the electronic medical record made a difference in your practice?
“When doctors call regarding an office visit, we are able to immediately access the note without going to our medical records department and looking for the actual chart. The notes are available through OACIS at any time.” The idea behind OACIS is to make access to important medical information faster and easier on the staff. Norton adds, “Also, when ‘precerting’ is necessary, the notes are available through OACIS without looking for the individual chart to provide much needed information. OACIS saves time from faxing and looking for the chart.”

If you could have any one enhancement to the electronic medical record what would it be? How would that help your practice?
“I would hope that every department at MUSC would make their office notes accessible through OACIS. Important information regarding a patient would be available immediately and before the patient visit.”
