IOP director Ballenger to retire

MUSC President Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., announced Tuesday, Feb. 19,  that after nearly 19 years with MUSC, James Ballenger,  M.D., will retire from the university on July 15.

Ballenger was chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences from 1983 to 2000 and was the founding director of the Institute of Psychiatry. Ballenger will continue his national and international efforts toward the development of new treatments in psychiatry and toward the reduction of barriers that exist between effective psychiatric treatments and the people who could benefit from them.

Rosalie Crouch, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs and provost, credited Ballenger for his many contributions to MUSC and for having “built a department ranked in the top 10 nationally.”

“We are grateful to Jim for his many years of excellent leadership here at MUSC and wish him well in his next phase,” Greenberg said. “Since he will be based in Charleston, we look forward to his continued support of the university’s teaching and research missions.”

A festschrift, to be presented as a tribute to Ballenger, is planned for late spring.
