Meet...J.D.

Name: James “J.D.” Garcia.

Department: MEDUCARE.

How long at MUSC: 7 years.

City born: Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany.

Family: Wife, Cara; daughters: Cori, 14, Samantha, 5, and Moira, 3.

Ingredient you must have in your refrigerator: Fresh Pesto.

Favorite TV show: Malcolm in the Middle.

Least favorite chore: Anything in the crawl space under my house.

Pet peeve: People who don’t even try.

Bad habit: I’ve quit smoking 14 times in the last five years.

Person you admire most: My wife Cara, for her ability to overcome any problem and kick a mudhole in it.

Activities in your free time: Picking up after my children.

Fondest childhood memory: Living in Japan.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would you be? My wife, so that we could better understand each other. But just for one day!

Historical event you would have like to have witnessed: 9/11, so that I could have done more to help.

Personality trait you admire in others: Courage.

Biggest challenge: In 1994, while working an accident, I was run over. After that experience, I began working to pass legislation that I wrote to protect emergency workers at accident scenes. It will require drivers approaching an accident or emergency to slow down and clear the lane to avoid crashing into emergency personnel and vehicles.

Three things that mean a lot to you: My family, good music, and sunshine on a warm spring day.

Something you do when no one is watching: Not long after we met, my wife caught me watching wrestling in my underwear and eating ice cream right out of the box. And she still married me.

Something that you do that is silly but really fun: Mooing at cows over the ambulance loudspeaker. They always look back at you!
