Apple Tree Society to host workshop for faculty April 10

The MUSC Apple Tree Society will sponsor a workshop from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in room 125, Solomon Room (formerly Gazes Auditorium).

The workshop entitled, Breaking Bad News to Learners: How to Conduct Critical Evaluations, will be presented by presented by Franklin Medio, Ph.D., director, graduate medical education, and George Arana, M.D., associate dean, graduate medical education.

“The inability to give learners honest, accurate and negative feedback, when their performance falls below acceptable standards, is a shortcoming of many faculty. Mistakes are often ignored, dismissed, minimized or excused away in an effort avoid a potentially uncomfortable interaction with a learner. To compound this problem, faculty often complete evaluation forms by writing satisfactory, average or marginal in cases when such passing scores are unwarranted,” said Medio.

This workshop will present strategies to break through the barriers that prevent faculty from giving critical feedback and it will provide techniques to handle these challenging situations. It will also address the legal aspects of remediation and dismissal.

Learning Objectives:
1.    To identify common barriers to confronting individuals who exhibit performance problems
2.    To discuss the five stages of a learner's reaction to
critical, negative feedback and techniques to manage each stage
3.  To describe six common traps that create inconsistencies in the evaluation process and techniques to avoid them
4.  To explain the concept of due process and other legal issues related to dismissal for academic cause and dismissal for disciplinary cause.

Light refreshments will be served. For registration or more information,  call 792-2081.
