MUSC students named to key AMSA posts

Four College of Medicine students were named to key leadership positions at the recent American Medical Student Association’s (AMSA) 52nd Annual National Convention in Houston, Texas. The event was held March 6-10.

College of Medicine’s Andrew Kaufman, Matthew Appenzeller, Ricky Choi and Nikki Hughes were elected to national and regional posts with the organization. A second-year parallel curriculum student and co-president of MUSC’s chapter, Kaufman was elected as coordinator of the tobacco control action group of AMSA’s Health Policy Action Committee. Kaufman will coordinate local and national student education and political advocacy.

Appenzeller, a second-year parallel student and current legislative affairs representative, was elected resident work hours coordinator to AMSA’s Health Policy Action Committee. This group will handle national activism regarding current legislation.

Third-year parallel student and former regional trustee for AMSA Region 5, Choi was elected as health and human rights issue coordinator to AMSA’s Global Health Action Committee. They will explore issues in the medical curriculum related to diversity about health and healthcare delivery worldwide.

A first-year student, Hughes was named a liaison to promote minority advocacy and awareness in AMSA’s Region 5 Minority Affairs Committee. AMSA Region 5 represents 15 medical schools in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

AMSA is the oldest and largest independent association of medical students and physicians-in-training. Their focus is to advocate national and international involvement in helping the medically underserved, inequalities in health care and other medical education issues.
