Computer Tip of the Week

ClinLAN User Asks: “I can see everyone’s I Drive in the My Computer icon.  Why?  How can I fix this?”

When you double-click on the “My Computer” icon and look on the I:\ Drive, you may notice that you can see everyone’s ID.

However, you cannot access their actual ClinLAN I:\Drive home directories, nor can they see yours. Previously, when ClinLAN used Novell servers, you only saw your I:\Drive directory (e.g. I:\smithj). However, now ClinLAN uses Microsoft servers which require that users view all I:\Drive directories (i.e. they cannot map directly to your user I:\ Drive directory). Therefore, you can see a listing of all I:\Drive directory IDs, but you cannot access the data stored within them. You can only see your own personal data. This is a temporary situation and will be fixed in ClinLAN 2000.

In the meantime, you can easily and quickly access your I:\ Drive directly by using the “My I:\ Drive” icon on your ClinLAN desktop. After opening your “I:\ Drive,” you can double-click on your Data folder to see your data.
