Children's organization honors Reigart with fellowship

The Children’s Environmental Health Network, a national collaboration of experts in medicine, nursing, research and policy, has established the J.Routt Reigart Fellowship in appreciation of the hard work and leadership MUSC’s J.Routt Reigart II, M.D., has devoted to the program.

Reigart, a professor of pediatrics, is director of general pediatrics at MUSC.

The network is a multi-disciplinary project, which Reigart has chaired since its inception in 1992. Last month, Reigart turned over his gavel as chair of the board to Lynn Goldman, M.D., of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Since its beginning as “Kids and the Environment” in 1992, the network has focused on research, policy and education. Its mission is to protect the fetus and child from environmental health hazards and promote a healthy environment.

Many children are living in communities that are disproportionately impacted by environmental exposures. The network maintains that improving the health and environment of these children should be a major priority. “Healthy children lead to healthy adults, and the health of our children is one of our most important investments,” directing the development of policy, legislation and regulation, according to network literature.

Reigart, whose major clinical interests are general pediatrics and toxicology, has been actively involved in children’s environmental health activities since 1972.

Charleston was one of the first cities in the country to have a comprehensive childhood lead poisoning prevention program beginning in 1972. In 1975, the activities of the Charleston program were extended to the entire state of South Carolina, making South Carolina one of the first states with a statewide screening program.
