Program for Web-based instruction to be held

The Office of the Provost is sponsoring a repeat of last fall’s successful semester-long faculty development program.

The aim is to give faculty members an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, practice and support in developing Web-based applications for their courses, including the use of course management systems such as WebCT. The course is designed for those beginning to develop online applications and those who have experience but wish to add additional components to their courses.

The university is committed to excellence in teaching and encourages the use of technology to improve learning. The program has been designed to disperse knowledge across the campus through the involvement of faculty and staff from all colleges. Those participating will be asked to mentor others and stimulate the ongoing development of educational technology innovations.

Classes will be held in room 301 of the new Cannon Building from 5 - 8 p.m. every Tuesday  from Sept. 3 through Dec. 10. Laboratory work sessions are included as well as Web site instruction. Faculty for the program are Thierry Bacro, Ph.D., associate professor, College of Medicine, Richard Hernandez, DrPH, associate professor, College of Health Professions, and Mary Mauldin, Ed.D, associate professor, Library Sciences and Informatics, all experienced with the design of online applications for teaching. C. Frank Starmer, Ph.D., associate provost of information technology and Valerie T. West, Ph.D., associate provost for educational programs, will serve as support faculty.

Enrollment is limited, and faculty must apply and be accepted. Certain requirements for participation exist.  The application deadline is June 30. An effort will be made to include faculty from across the campus. Notification of acceptance will be given by July 15.

The application form and information about the program can be found at http://www2.edserv.musc.edu/application/information.htm.
