Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day June 2

Hollings Cancer Center and Piccolo Spoleto are hosting a open-air Charleston Symphony Orchestra performance from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 2 at Liberty Square Park as part of National Cancer Survivors Day.

This celebration is one of more than 700 events taking place across North America and elsewhere to honor cancer survivors and those who support them, and to call attention to the issues of cancer survivorship.

Survivors will celebrate with a free open-air orchestra performance and Survivor Recognition Ceremony. The local event helps support nationwide effort conducted by the National Cancer Survivors Day  (NCSD) Foundation and sponsored nationally by Aventis Oncology, Coping magazine, Lilly Oncology and Varian Medical Systems.

“The event promises to lift your spirits,” said Michelle Peterson, NCSD coordinator for Hollings Cancer Center. “Whether you're a survivor, a family member, a friend, or a medical professional, you'll find our NCSD event overflowing with camaraderie, compassion, faith, dreams, love and celebration. Come listen to the concert and learn why surviving is an attitude about life and living each day to the fullest.”

A cancer survivor is defined by the NCSD Foundation as anyone living with a history of cancer-from the time of diagnosis through the remainder of life.

An estimated 8.9 million Americans are now living with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer.
