Letters to Dr. Ray Greenberg, MUSC staff

Since becoming president, I (we) have received many letters commending our faculty and staff for outstanding patient care. These letters, or excerpts from letters, from patients and their families provide ample evidence of their high regard for our clinical services. I am pleased to share some of them with you, and recognize those who are providing skilled and compassionate care.

Dear Dr. Raymond Greenberg:
I have been very impressed with the care I have received from Dr. Ross Rames in the Urology Department. Dr. Rames, his administrative and clinical staff, have done a great job taking care of my needs in a compassionate and professional manner. My husband also had a positive experience under the care of Dr. Nabil Bissada. He was very impressed with the efficiency of the surgical procedure from beginning to end as well as the attentive nursing care that he received. We are very glad we chose MUSC for our health care needs.

Dear Ray:
All too often, a CEO hears only the negative. Here’s a positive. I attended a Health-Aging Strategic Planning meeting at MUSC and locked my keys in my vehicle in an MUSC lot. It was late afternoon and the attendant didn’t think that Public Safety would risk trying to unlock my electronic locks.

Terry Howell, from MUSC Public Safety, was unsuccessful in unlocking my vehicle, however, he did one better by offering me a ride to my home to pick up a spare set of keys. I told him that I live 30 minutes south of here and said that it was no problem.
He never asked if I was a patient of just a visitor, he just offered to assist.

Dear Ray:
I want you to know how pleased I was with the treatment I received during my stay at MUSC. Under Dr. Allen Johnson’s general supervision, I felt the care was superior in every respect. Equally impressive was the attitude of the staff- from the orderlies to the nurses, they were all cheerful, helpful and indicated to me a high degree of morale. MUSC is an institution of which we can all be proud.

Dear Mr. President:
I had the unfortunate experience of an auto accident which prompted the need to be sent to the emergency room for treatment of injuries.

The care provided in the emergency room was outstanding, however, my wounds required a surgeon and I had the good fortune of having the opportunity of being treated by Dr. John Sonfield, the surgeon on duty at the time. His caring manner and skillful care was outstanding. Both my family and I appreciated Dr. Sonfield’s patience, careful explanations, and obvious sympathy for all our concerns. He is a credit to MUSC, the medical profession, and to our community.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
This is to express my appreciation for the professional, concern and caring treatment I received from: Dr. Bruce Thiers, Dr. Daniel Warad, Susan McMillan, Betty Turner, Lillian Rivers, and Ruthie Gilliard of your dermatology Clinic. The care I received was, in one word, superb.

Dear Doctors and Nurses:
Our family has been recovering from the loss of our daughter, a sudden and unexpected loss of a baby girl that we didn’t even have the chance to know. On behalf of my wife, daughter, and son, I would like to thank all of you for the care that we received. Everyone did an outstanding job in comforting us in our loss. The entire staff treated us with dignity, respect, and compassion. As a family, we greatly appreciate everything that was done and will always remember these acts of kindness.

In closing, I hope everyone at MUSC can continue to perform their wonderful deeds in the caring of the sick. Yours is a noble profession, that often doesn’t get the credit it deserves for helping us all to live longer, more productive, happy lives.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I am a recovering leukemia patient who started treatment in February 2001 and am writing to tell you about my experience. I was diagnosed by Dr. Caio Rocha-Lima and Dr. Colin P. Curran with acute Leukemia and since have been treated by several of your staff. As you know, it is very difficult to remain with the same doctor for most inpatient stays, but Dr. Curran has stayed with me the entire time. I currently see Dr. Curran and Dr. Uzair Chaudhary at the Hollings Cancer Center and they are both very personable and always willing to answer my questions.

I also want to mention the staff on 8 west and the Hollings Cancer Center. I want to mention two of the most wonderful and knowledgable nurses that made the most difference to me. Monica Mummy and Laura Perdue. They were very open and honest with me when I needed it most. At Hollings, I want to mention two people who have helped me the most, Karen Carnevale, R.N., and Charles Watts in Financial Services. Karen was/is my nurse in day treatment and she is wonderful. Charles Watts has been incredibly helpful to me on all financial issues. His kind words and encouragement helped in my time of need.

Dear Dr. Sunil Patel:
I wanted to tell you how extraordinarily pleased we are with the care that you and your colleagues delivered to our family member this past week. From the very beginning, everyone was professional, extremely competent and routinely kind and generous. Everyone from Dr. David Bachman to all of the doctors and nurses told us what an excellent physician you are and that proved to be completely accurate. We are very pleased that his current and future care is in your hands.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
My father was recently operated on at MUSC by the most compassionate, knowledgeable neurosurgeon my family has ever dealt with. His name is Dr. Ehud Mendel and he and his staff are to be commended. My father had extensive spinal cord surgery and we were kept informed of what was happening all during the surgery. Dr. Mendel spent an inordinate amount of time with my family at the conclusion of the surgery going over every detail. MUSC has always been the hospital of choice for my family. Everyone in the surgery holding area, where we spent eight hours before the actual surgery, was wonderful.  My father is not the easiest patient in the world, but your staff bent over backwards to see that he was comfortable. Dr. Mendel is certainly an asset to your staff. His knowledge and his manner put my parents at ease from the very beginning.
