Strategic Plan in works for October presentation

As noted in an earlier The Catalyst, the process and current status of developing University Strategic Plan 2002 was detailed at the April 3 president's town hall faculty meeting. This has actually been in the planning and drafting stage since the first of the year and is targeted for completion of the plan by the fall for presentation to the MUSC trustees in October.

The overall planning organization consists of four work groups operating under the direction and support of the 2002 Strategic Plan executive committee. This is the first of five articles highlighting each planning component and focuses on the executive committee.

It has and will be meeting at least monthly throughout the whole plan development process to provide the following:

  • Review of all relevant previous plans for orientation and continuing relevance.
  • Set the overall scope, time frame, leadership, and participants of planning which includes defining and charging each work group.
  • Periodically review and help guide each work group to insure realistic plans.
  • Oversight as required to assure that the plans are actually implemented to every extent feasible.
  • Ongoing input to establish Strategic Plan 2002 as a “living document” with capability and provisions for appropriate ongoing adjustments in response to changing environmental factors.

MUSC President Ray Greenberg is particularly appreciative of the time and expertise being so generously donated by the committee members.

Vice Admiral Albert J. Baciocco's career of many leadership positions included being director of research, development, and acquisition in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He currently is a member of the MUSC Research Development Foundation.

Wilbur J. Prezzano presently serves as chair of the MUSC Health Sciences Foundation Board and retired as vice chairman of Eastman Kodak Company.  He is also a director of TD Bank USA (Jersey City, NJ), Lance Inc. (Charlotte, NC), Roper Industries (Bogart, Georgia), and the Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston).

William A. Baker also is a member of the Health Sciences Foundation board and is a retired real estate developer from New York who was a board member of Georgetown University and a hospital volunteer.

All three have settled in Charleston and become active members of the community, and thus they offer immediate local and state insights as well as  vast planning and organizational experience.

The ultimate goal of Strategic Plan 2002 is to develop a dynamic strategy to guide the Medical University and its affiliates in most effective use of finite resources over the next five years as necessary to successfully fulfill its missions while meeting the ongoing external and internal challenges that will continuously arise. Under the able leadership of the executive committee, the four work groups are well along the way to meeting this goal.

Next week The Catalyst will feature the first of the work groups that is dealing with “Resources and Environment.”
