Ophthalmology fellows complete ORBIS studies

Ophthalmology fellows Stella Arthur, M.D., and Jaya Thakur, M.D., were recognized recently for completing their studies in the ORBIS Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology through MUSC's Storm Eye Institute.

Arthur, who is originally from Uzbekistan, Russia, completed her ophthalmologic studies under the direction of David Apple, M.D., professor of ophthalmology and director of SEI's Center for Research on Ocular Therapeutics and Diodevices. She is currently working toward a U.S. ophthalmology residency and later plans to return to Uzbekistan to establish a pediatric ophthalmology center.

Nepal native Thakur completed a one-year study working under the guidance of
Wilson, Richard Saunders, M.D., and other pediatric ophthalmology faculty. She returns as Nepal's first pediatric ophthalmologic faculty member where she will help organize and direct the pediatric ophthalmology division at the Tilganga Eye Center. Takur's expertise will allow her to travel around the country, especially to remote villages, to help prevent blindness in children.

Since 1997, ORBIS International has created more than 440 successful programs in 80 countries. A portion of the program provides a year-long fellowship in hospital-based training. SEI is a regular host of international specialists who desire to improve their expertise in corneal and cataract studies, ophthalmology research and other specialty areas.
