SGA president welcomes students to MUSC

by Gregg Johnson, President
MUSC Student Government Association
On behalf of your Student Government Association, I am pleased to welcome you to MUSC.  This unique environment allows students from a wide variety of medical fields to forge friendships and develop into professionals who respect their colleagues'  varying roles in medicine.  My desire is that you feel at home in Charleston as you are received into the MUSC family.

Gregg Johnson

The Student Government Association exists to represent the interests of the students at MUSC and to be a vessel for action in those interests. The SGA is present to serve as an official student advocate to those who make decisions affecting the direction of your education, and your SGA representatives make a sincere effort to ensure that the voice of the students is heard. We are extremely fortunate to have a body of administrators who sincerely desire a terrific experience for MUSC students and listen to our concerns. SGA is comprised of elected representatives from all the colleges. Elections for new student representatives are held shortly after fall or spring classes begin, and I encourage you to take an interest in your classmates and your education and run for representative of your class.

The rigors of the classroom are difficult and you will want to break from these stresses at any time possible.

Part of the task of looking out for student interests is to provide means for students to come together in an environment that is less academic. Activities include social and cultural events and events that may help your development as a well-rounded health care professional. From the St. Luke's Concert Series, RiverDogs' games and Edisto canoe trips to the 53rd annual spring celebration, Alhambra. We are constantly searching for ways to interest students in things that reach beyond the spectrum of health care and kindle camaraderie with each other.

SGA also sponsors five different intramural sports over the course of the year. Information on what is happening around MUSC can be found on campus bulletin boards, in your e-mail, and in campus publications such as Student Lifelines,  The Catalyst, and Semester Highlights.

More information can be found at our Web site http://www.musc.edu/sga/

Our experience at MUSC marks an exciting period in our lives.  We are given the opportunity to further ourselves and choose the people we will become. In SGA we desire to direct and assist you along the path of your interests and are here to help. As concerns about your MUSC experience arise, take action and contact me or an SGA representative. Voicing our interests is the only vehicle we have for change and I welcome you to take part in making MUSC a better place.

Visitors are always welcome in the Student Programs Office in the Harper Student Center, and we look forward to assisting you in anyway possible as
you progress in your vocation as a health care professional.
