Burned children enjoy summer camp

Nearly 60 children from across South Carolina experienced the joys of summer camp among a group of very special friends during the sixth annual Camp Can Do, a specially designed camp for burned children. The session was held July 1-5 at Camp Saint Christopher on Seabrook Island.

Camp Can Do was created by South Carolina firefighters and the Medical University’s Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Program (ACBC) in the summer of 1997. Funded through the collection and redemption of recyclable aluminum cans, Camp Can Do gives burned children a chance to bond with other children like themselves—and not feel different.

The camp’s goal is to give the children a fun, unforgettable summer camp experience and help them realize that they “Can Do” anything. It offers a variety of fun-filled activities, such as canoeing, entertainment, magic shows, cultural exhibitions, visits from local fire departments and emergency service agencies, arts and crafts, swimming, boat rides, fishing, a karaoke dance party, firefighter relay games and much more.

Coordinating these events was a wide range of community volunteers who served as camp counselors, including firefighters, adult burn survivors, MUSC Pediatric Burn Team members and Children’s Hospital staff. This year, two graduates of Camp Can Do and a New York City firefighter also served as volunteer counselors.
